Course level: Graduate

This 480-hour precepted clinical course provides students with clinical experiences needed to develop and broaden their clinical skills and judgments. Students will consolidate and refine their acquired skills in assessment and client management in order to attain a level of competency and proficiency that will allow them to function independently in the nurse practitioner role.

  • Clinical: Obtain and accurately document a relevant health history for patients in all phases of the individual and family life cycle.
  • Clinical: Perform and accurately document appropriate comprehensive or symptom-focused physical examinations on patients, including developmental and behavioral screening and physical system evaluations.
  • Clinical: Order, perform, and interpret age-, gender-, and condition-specific diagnostic tests and screening procedures.
  • Clinical: Formulate comprehensive differential diagnoses while considering epidemiology, environmental and community characteristics, and life stage development, including the presentation seen with increasing age, family, and behavioral risk factors.
  • Clinical: Provide health protection, health promotion, disease prevention interventions, and treatment strategies to improve or maintain optimum health for all family members.
  • Clinical: Treat common acute and chronic physical and mental illnesses and common injuries.
  • Clinical: Practice lawfully based on the state’s Nurse Practice Act, which includes the methodology of practice (California students: specifically Standardized Procedures and furnishing number).

  • Analyze patient access issues surrounding various insurance programs.
  • Detail appropriate coding and billing procedures.

  • Discuss various state licensure and national certification requirements.
  • Apply clinical experiences to scope of practice for the state of intended practice.
  • Relate the regulations for prescribing and dispensing medications to scope of practice.
  • Prepare a professional portfolio.

  • Discuss professional expectations for advancement in the field.
  • Explore future trends in advanced practice.

  • Compare and contrast methods used in assessment and diagnosis.

  • Compare and contrast methods used in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Discuss the restrictions and guidelines for prescribing Schedule II-V classes of drugs for pain management.
  • Compare and contrast the prescribing abilities between eligible prescribers for the state of intended practice as it relates to scheduled medications.

  • Reflect on individual progress through the Family Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Discuss strategies for handling ethical, regulatory, and legal issues within the profession.

  • Apply appropriate test-taking strategies.
  • Synthesize program competencies in clinical practice.
