Course level: NUR Undergraduate

This is the second course for students addressing basic pharmacology. This course applies the mechanisms of drug action, medication effectiveness, side effects, dosage calculations, and drug interactions in specific clinical situations.  Focus is on nutraceuticals and natural products, endocrine medications, and chemotherapy drugs.  Patients suffering from mental health behaviors, psychosis, alcohol and substance abuse disorders, and eating disorders, as well as those with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, are also addressed.  Issues faced by pregnant, pediatric, geriatric, and obese patients, as well as those with cancer, renal issues, Asthma, and COPD in relation to pharmacology are also discussed. The course provides an understanding of toxicology and includes practice with dosing calculations. Adherence to ethical and legal standards of health care professionals in relation to medication management, considering age, gender, and cultural sensitivity, is also a focus.  Finally, the course provides an understanding of the affect of drug action on diseases and disorders.
