Course level: Upper Division

This course covers prepping, cleaning, organizing, and augmenting data for analysis. Students learn how to prepare data by cleaning it, creating the necessary variables, formatting all variables, transcribing data, adjusting data that requires weighting, scale transformations, and selecting the data analysis strategy.

  • Clean and recode data to prepare it for analysis using data cleaning techniques in Excel®.
  • Prepare a summary description of actions taken to clean data for analysis.
  • Explain data cleaning tasks and illustrate data cleaning tasks with examples.
  • Verify data consistency, manipulate heterogeneous data, and identify missing data using Microsoft® Excel®.

  • Create a clear and documented report dashboard with visualizations using Microsoft® Excel®.
  • Describe and compare how and when to use tables, charts, and graphs for data presentation.
  • Manipulate data sets and create tables, graphs, and charts in Microsoft® Excel® for presenting cleaned data.
  • Arrange data graphically using the appropriate tool for the data.

  • Apply quantitative modeling and data analysis techniques to the solution of real-world business problems, communicate findings, and effectively present results using data visualization techniques.
  • Employ appropriate data-cleaning modeling techniques to evaluate and analyze a business problem.
  • Evaluate code of ethics for a professional organization and apply ethical standards to a data modeling business case.
