Admission requirements

University of Phoenix believes in making higher education accessible to as many people as possible. That’s why it does not require fees, SAT scores, GMAT scores, essays as part of the application process.

However, prospective students still need to meet certain requirements to be admitted to University of Phoenix. The requirements can vary based on your degree program and background. Generally, students need to meet these criteria to apply:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • Not have been expelled from another university
  • If a transfer student, submit official transcripts and test scores from other universities

If you’re applying for a master’s degree, you will need a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 2.5. If you’re applying for a doctoral program, you’ll need a graduate degree, relevant work experience and a minimum 3.0 GPA to apply.

In addition to academic qualifications, students must also provide proof of English proficiency if they are non-native English speakers. This can be demonstrated through standardized tests, such as the TOEFL or IELTS, or by completing English courses at an accredited institution.

Applying as a new student

University of Phoenix welcomes new students who are interested in pursuing their education. The admissions process for new students is straightforward and can be completed entirely online. Simply visit the University of Phoenix website, fill out the form and create an account.

Once you submit your personal and academic information, an admissions representative will contact you to guide you through the process. They might ask you for additional documentation, schedule an interview or require an assessment. If you have transfer credits or work experience, you should mention it to your admissions counselor to see if you qualify for credit.

When your admission goes through, you can start signing up for classes. The University’s semester-free format makes it easy to sign up quickly and start earning college credits. Start dates vary by degree program, but many learners are able to enroll and start learning nearly right away.

Applying as an international student

While University of Phoenix is among the largest online universities in the United States, it can also serve the needs of international students. However, international students need to meet a different set of criteria for admission. These requirements are designed to ensure international students are prepared for the academic and cultural challenges of studying in the U.S.

The requirements include:

  • Legally residing in the United States with permanent residency, a valid visa or political asylum.
  • Submitting transcripts from a recognized international university translated into English.
  • Providing proof of English proficiency. However, if you have at least 30 transferable credits from a country where English is the official language, you may not need to take this proficiency test.

If you do not have transfer credits from another institution, University of Phoenix offers other pathways to make your education more efficient. For example, the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) allows students to participate in an evaluation process to earn college credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside of the traditional classroom setting.
